Mitral Valve Prolapse question...

Postby jal » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:08 am

My wife has mitral valve prolapse and suffers from poor circulation in the extremities, varicose veins and other related symptoms. Does MVP exclude her from being a candidate for EECP? If not, I'll have her ask her cardiologist about it next time she goes.

MVP is not a contraindication for EECP therapy. If a patient has clinically significant heart valve disease, particluarly of the aortic valve, this can be a treatment precaution depending on the degree of regurgitation or backflow of blood that might be going on. Many patients with MVP have no clinically significant mitral regurgitation. It is a good idea to have an echocardiogram performed recently before initiating EECP therapy to evaluate overall heart function.
