Chronic refractory angina pectoris: recent progress and remaining challenges

As described by Prof. Johannes Waltenberger in his editorial entitled, Chronic refractory angina pectoris (CRAP): recent progress and remaining challenges, published 31 July 2017 in the European Heart Journal refractory angina occurs in patients with advanced, often diffuse coronary artery disease (CAD). These patients fail to be completely revascularized by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and/or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and continue to have remaining angina pectoris symptoms despite maximal pharmacological therapy. Among the novel modalities for improving myocardial perfusion in these patients Prof. Waltenberger cites Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy.
